Patient Choice Policy Statement

NHS Coventry and Rugby Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) already buys a full range of excellent planned care services from its local Trusts UHCW (The University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust), and The George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust (GEH) and would always recommend as a first choice patients accessing these local services.

However, if a patient is not happy to go to our local provider the CCG will always support a patient to exercise choice to another provider in accordance with their rights set outlined in the NHS Constitution.

You can read more about your choices within the NHS here.

Find and compare hospitals

Choosing an alternative provider is very personal matter and relates to many factors relevant to you as an individual. This could be how easy it is to get there, the parking arrangements, infection rates, and the reputation of the hospital or its location.

The NHS eReferral Service helps to show waiting times for a first appointment by provider, however this should not be the only factor on which to make a choice, often the overall time between referral and actually receiving treatment can be the same or shorter, as there are different waiting times for investigative tests.

It is often useful to review performance across a number of areas, and to look at factors such as word of mouth, friends and family test  i.e. would you recommend this service to a family or friend.

We continue to work with all GPs making referrals, to ensure they are aware of a patients’ right to choose and that the appropriate information is available to support informed decision making.

- Patient Leaflets

We also commission a number of excellent community based services that deliver care for patients outside hospital, in keeping with our aim to provide care for people closer to home.

However, choice does not apply where a community service is available. You may be referred to a specific provider for the service in question and you will not generally be able to choose to access services from another provider, unless there are special arrangements in place to support this. If a hospital appointment is later required then the community service or your GP will offer a choice of hospital providers.

Examples of our locally provided community services are:

• Musculoskeletal conditions (orthopaedic, rheumatology and pain management and Physiotherapy)
• Gynaecology
• Diabetes
• Ophthalmology
• Vasectomy
• Respiratory
• Ear Nose and Throat
• Dermatology
• Other services currently delivered by Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Partnership
